EMP Attack
Are any of you concerned about a potential EMP attack from terrorists or rogue/unfriendly states? What special preparations are you considering / have you made?
(EMP is ElectroMagnetic Pulse, such as what would be generated by a nuclear bomb). |
Re: EMP Attack
No need for a nuclear in order to create EMP, you ca make the EMP bomb by itself.

Re: EMP Attack
I think your biggest issues are going to be staying alive, like fallout, wind direction, clean water, etc
I believe (this is all from a very distant reading on EMP), that most chips would be fried. So your car is gone, computer is dead, small radio might survive, TV is likely dead. focus on basics There might be a way to shield from an EMP blast, but first you need a fallout shelter, food, water, etc get your priorities right |
Re: EMP Attack
I print of all the good articles and information I find on the net that are not part of the MSM. I will be fine without electronic data if the need ever arises, although I will miss the access to new information.

Re: EMP Attack
I just ordered a new safe and told them to take out the electronic lock and replace it with a mechanical one because of that story on survival monkey.
EMP goes off and nothing electrical works. I am no expert but I thought it can happen and then you cant get to guns, pm's or whatever else you have in there. Weird how things you read, even fiction can change your perceptions. NOOB |

I only looked at gun safes that had mechanical locks or that had a metal over-ride key. A good safe should shield anything in it. |

Anything electronic inside a safe will be fine if the safe is sealed and has at least a layer of metal. If you want to store items that aren't too valuable, yet are still electronic (emergency radios, calculators, small electronics), just put them in a metal filing cabinet. In the event of an emp, they will be fine. The metal shell acts as a Faraday cage and the inside is completely unaffected by electronic currents outside. |

The "Lights Out" novel is about surviving the aftermath of an EMP event. It covers a lot of what you might expect in a SHTF situation. You can find it at: http://www.survivalmonkey.com/SF%20b...ut-Current.pdf |
Re: EMP Attack
One nuke goes off over Denver...how far does the EMP go? Is it a coast-to-coast problem?
Not talking about a nationwide tactical strike here. Obviously that would be a whole different ballgame. But does anyone know just how widespread the effect of an EMP would be? Just curious. I've heard talk of EMP's, but don't know if I ever heard how far they would go. Sometimes this guy is my best friend...===> :withstupi |
Re: EMP Attack
From what I have read it would take at least three of them to knock out the US.
Already have two old tube radios and now I have my old diesel car coming in. |

Actually, one very powerful EMP set off over Kansas at a height of 300 miles would affect the entire Continental US. To even get one up that high requires a lot of resources, so it would almost have to be an attack by a foreign power, not a terrorist attack. Terrorists would more than likely opt for multiple weapons as Ponce points out. Also, at that distance, it wouldn't matter if it was just designed as an EMP, or if it was a nuke, as it would be too far away to do any damage (no fallout, minimal radiation, etc.). Interestingly enough, a thermonuclear weapon actually does less damage via EMP than a normal atomic bomb. The fusion blast of course would do way more damage to physical objects however. |
